diversityThe Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC) is a U.S.
Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration
(NNSA) facility managed and operated by Honeywell Federal
Manufacturing & Technologies (FM&T).--Our primary business is
to manufacture sophisticated mechanical, electronic, and
engineered-material components for our nation's defense
system.--Our goal is to seek innovative solutions that surpass our
customers' expectations; to accomplish this, we research, develop,
and deploy some of the most advanced design and manufacturing
technologies in use in the United States today. This position is
seeking candidates from universities involved in one or more of
these programs: NNSA's Minorities Serving Institutes Partnership
Program (MSIPP), a KCNSC Master Collaboration Agreement (MCA)
university, or a KCNSC R&D consortium partner. MSIPP's goal is
to increase participation of women and minorities in NNSA's nuclear
security enterprise and across the nation in STEM disciplines,
developing individuals, building core competencies for NNSA, and
improving institutional capacity in Minority Serving Institutions.
The MCA program seeks to facilitate research and development
relevant to KCNSC mission through plant-directed research and
development and other low-technology-maturity programs. The
consortium model supports multi-institution collaborative efforts
in a broader topic of interest to KCNSC. These non-permanent
positions have been designed for a faculty member from a
KCNSC-supported MSIPP, MCA, or consortium university or college to
spend 10-12 weeks of summer 2024 at KCNSC to expand their research
efforts and understanding of the KC campus activities. The faculty
member will work as part of a larger team of Scientists and
Engineers to achieve the scope of work on one or more projects
related to materials, electronics, or mechanical components. This
position will:--
- Interface with internal organizations to resolve design,
R&D, production and acceptance issues
- Identify future technology focus areas
- Research and evaluate the relevant scientific literature in
preparation for solving complex materials/component development
problems
- Evaluate research results and make recommendations on a
project's forward path
- Draft reports, prepare and deliver presentations on research
results as needed to communicate progress and meet project
milestones
- Expand the existing project team knowledge baseYou Must Have:
- A Faculty position at a partnering MSIPP and/or MCA consortium
university or college in academic year 2021/2022 in a Chemistry,
Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar department.
- Ph.D. in Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or
similar.
- U.S. Citizen (and no other citizenship) in order to obtain a
DOE "Q" level clearance.
- This position may require that a Non-Disclosure Agreement be
signed, as well as other agreements regarding the ownership of any
intellectual property that may be developed. --We Value:
- Ongoing research and development collaborations with KCNSC,
either through MSIPP or an MCA
- Experience with a variety of materials characterization and
analytical techniques including mechanical and rheological
properties
- Progressive experience in electrical engineering research
- Experience in design and testing of mechanical systems
- Experience in modeling and simulation of physical
phenomena
- Experience reflective of ability to negotiate, positively
influence leaders, team with peers, and mentor teammates to drive
resolution for mutually beneficial outcomes
- Experience in strategic development with demonstrated success
negotiating these efforts
- Leadership experience managing large complex projects with
history of successful outcomes
- Interpersonal skills - ability to build relationships and
communicate with all levels of an organization
- Strong communication skills - verbal, written, and
presentation
- All employees must work in a safe manner in accordance with the
Laboratory Health and Safety Program. -- Note: Eligible candidates
will be required to submit a 1-2 page proposal indicating 1) how
their Visiting Scientist experience KCNSC would benefit their
institution (for MSIPP institutions) and/or 2) how their Visiting
Scientist experience would benefit KCNSC R&D efforts (for
